A basic personal tax filing cost about $190 the first year. Not the best but not the worst. This year it cost me $850. She filed my taxes for a small business and was also doing some bookkeeping for me. I have minimal charges and I did most of the work myself before I handed her the papers so there was maybe three to four hours of work at best. It cost me $450 to file and that doesn’t include what I owe the government. Then it cost me another $350 for seven hours of work that she billed me for. At this point, she cannot give me to this day a printout of the details on how many hours she spent doing my bookkeeping to add my receipts. There’s no trace, there’s no tracking. Then I asked for a breakdown of the tax filing and why it cost $450. Keep this handy: they charge you for the basic starting point of $216. This is what is shown on their website but it won’t show you any more. Then, with the total that she added in that seven hours of bookkeeping I was charged for, she added that total to a single line on the tax form. She just transferred the number from her total on one piece of paper and write it on the tax form and one line – I was charged an extra $160 for that. Then they nickel and dime you to death at $30 a pop. So I got an extra $90 because I used my vehicle expenses, home office expenses, and utilities to add into yet three more tax form lines. Getting the software installed is challenging. I've run into permission issues and other complicated problems. Support is typically not helpful. In the review phase there are always plenty of errors flagged and many can't be corrected and some are in conflict with other parts of the software... that is if you can even figure out what has been flagged and why it is incorrect. VERY frustrating. One year I missed out on a vehicle depreciation deduction because of a software issue that I wasn't able to resolve until the following year. > > I've use a version of the tax software for over 10 years. usually the Premium \& Business version. There are usually issues every year, however I have also tried a competitor's software which was a lot worse. Don't expect much help from H\&R Block. My experience has been that they know very little about the desktop version of the Premium \& Business and have not been much help with software issues and bugs. I've found better help from ChatGPT. The cost is minimal and it gets the job done, but it could definitely be better. My guess is that the online version is less buggy, but I can't tolerate the interface. There is completely different application for the 1040 form taxes.
